Once in a while, we get a sense
of how quickly things move
even on a very large scale.
Experience teaches us to act quickly or not at all
when sunset glows golden pink in the sky.
All too often, we’ve gone searching for cameras
or tried to call someone to share the moment
only to lose that moment
as the radiant sky quickly fades to grey.
Weeks ago, North and South America
and much of the rest of the world
pulled out all forms of lawn chairs
stretched out on blankets
sat quietly alone, or held parties
outside in the dark
to watch our collective shadow.
The lunar eclipse offering a rare glimpse
of the pace at which the moon moves.
We earthlings can’t help but watch.
Spellbound by the size and speed.
Fascinated by our shadowed reflection.
And it’s in that place of awe
that we are reminded to do the opposite.
To pause and hold precious the moments
that we see racing across the sky.
