Most of what we do is never truly finished—there’s always another update, another meeting, another deadline, another project. And yet, our predominant work culture perpetuates a myth of ‘arrival:’ the idea that if we just tried a bit harder, we could become that calm, polished, accomplished person we see reflected in the stereotypes of our imagination.

That belief is misleading. Life and work are inherently messy—full of interruptions, restarts, and cycles of overwhelm and flow. There’s no final state of perfect completion waiting on the other side of effort.

When this false belief has you in its grips, self-compassion and trust can lead you out. Compassion for your unfinished parts, and trust in the winding path: the myriad stories of when things worked out, because of–not in spite of—the weaving, spiraling journey you took to get there.

Take a deep breath. Do what you can, as authentically as you can, and let it stand. Let the notion of ‘enough’ settle in you. What matters is showing up. Again and again, looking scarcity in the eye and choosing abundance. That is all and enough, carrying with it a sense of presence and plenty. Be at peace, arrival is just a myth.
